With the nights drawing in, we're getting ready to create a cosy home atmosphere to help us relax this autumn. A classic autumnal home interior features soft throws and comfy pillows on the sofa, pretty printed mugs and eye-catching books on the coffee table, and warm, gentle lighting to help you leave your stress at the door. Check out our simple tips to help you adjust your home design to encapsulate that snug fall feeling.

Throws

A throw is an incredibly simple but effective way of making your space look warm, inviting and ready for fall. You can drape throws across armchairs or sofas, lay them across the bed for an added layer of warmth at night, or stack a pile of folded throws in a wicker basket ready to grab whenever it gets chilly. We're always trying our best to be environmentally conscious, so we've been on the hunt for high-quality sustainable throws made from natural materials.

Wool throws are a classic choice for fall and winter and we love The British Blanket Co.'s Herringbone Armchair Throws  for their sumptuous softness and timelessly British style.

For something a bit lighter and more contemporary, we love the Brawley 100% Cotton Knitted Throw  from Made. Or, for those who want a truly laid-back and bohemian autumn vibe, we adore the hand-woven and hand-dyed organic cotton Talari Indigo Throw from The Citizenry.

Pillows

Autumn nights were made for curling up on the sofa with a book or a movie, so a collection of stylish and comfortable pillows is essential for fall. Finding sustainable pillows can be tricky because so many mass-produced pillows and covers are made from synthetic materials which aren't good for the environment. Thankfully, we've discovered a few collections of sustainable and stylish pillows that are perfect for fall.

The Tyba Collection from Zuahaza  They have been inspired by the colours and flavours of fruits used by the Guane people of central Colombia, and the natural palette and designs of the pillows are perfect for fall.

We also love the fair trade, handmade Aditi Linen Throw Pillow Covers by Soil to Studio, which feature rich, vibrant colours and beautiful prints which are inspired by Indian Thar desert communities.  Finally, also we love 54Kibo's range of pillows which feature colourful West African fabrics and graphic prints, and are the perfect way to inject some vibrancy into autumn.

For the coffee table

An inviting coffee table is one with beautiful and eye-catching books that compel you to take a seat and peacefully flick through the pages of a stylish and easy read. One of our favourite coffee table books is  All in Good Taste  by Kate Spade, which has a gorgeous bubble gum pink cover and is packed full of the iconic designer's tips on modern-day entertaining. We also love Good Vibes, Good Life by Vex King, which offers the perfect inspiration for putting a positive spin on every experience and pushing away harmful toxic energy.

If you prefer coffee table books that whisk you away from the humdrum of daily life, choose ones with beautiful scenic photographs. Amalfi Coast by Carlos Souza is packed full of gorgeous images of the famous Italian coastline, while The Life and Love of the Sea by Lewis Blackwell provides a stunning tour of the ocean via photographs taken both above and below the sea's surface.

Mugs and fancy tea

Autumn is tea season; nothing beats settling down with a refreshing and warming cup of tea on a chilly fall afternoon. We love the aesthetic of a mismatched and colourful mug selection, and with such a huge variety of printed mugs available, you'll never be short for choice. However, we love the rustic look of glazed stoneware mugs, such as the ornate, moulded Tea Room Mug  or the Zabra Mug  which has a beautiful dreamlike dip-dye glazing effect.

Don't forget the tea to fill your mugs with, and we recommend treating yourself to something special with the Famous Tea Selection from Fortnum & Mason These speciality teas have superior taste and quality so that every tea break feels like a special occasion.

Bits and bobs

For some finishing touches to your autumn haven, we want to share a few extra bits and bobs that will add some extra style to those dark nights.

The Tintsaba Sisal Basket is the perfect accessory to add a splash of colour to your autumn coffee table. Hand-woven from 100% natural sisal and dyed emerald with non-toxic dyes, it blends nature and vibrancy in a way that is wholly autumnal. Another way to brighten up your coffee table is with a colourful candle.  We love the Totally Groovy Marble Pillar Candle from Flamingo Candles, which has bold orange and pink tones reminiscent of an autumn evening sky.

If you're looking for gentle, soft lighting this autumn, check out the Nyro Floor Lamp which has a slim and elegant black and brass frame and a frosted glass globe. Industrial yet homely, this lamp reminds us of old-fashioned streetlights and hits us with a sense of comforting nostalgia.

Finally, don't forget to make yourself as cosy as your home with some comfortable loungewear to relax in after a long day. We love Parachute's Classic Turkish Cotton Slippers which are soft, breathable and cushioned to give your feet the break they deserve. When it comes to clothes, opt for organic cotton for the ultimate comfort; check out Harvest & Mill's range of shirts, joggers and socks to find comfy 'fits manufactured via sustainable and ethical supply chains.
